One of my favorite career focused books is by Brian Tracy. The title is “Reinvention, How to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life.”
Years ago, this book challenged me to think about the concept of being self-employed no matter who you work for. “One of the biggest mistakes you can ever make is to ever think that you work for anyone but yourself. We have moved from an era of life-long employment to an era of life-long employability. No matter who signs your paycheck, you are your own boss.” (p.127).
What a powerful statement and to back it up this resonated.
“The top 3 percent of Americans view themselves as self-employed, no matter where they work and no matter who signs their paycheck. This attitude of self-employment makes them more valuable to their companies and, as a result, they get paid more and promoted faster.” (p.127).
Start acting like you are self-employed and I bet you will keep the relevent skills current, work a few extra hours a day, and pay attention to your use of time. I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and how you have leveraged this mindset to change the trajectory of your career.
